This is one of the most significant innovations we offer at Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic.

Traditional hammertoe surgery is invasive. It often involves removing bone, placing pins or implants in the toe, and requires a hospital or surgery center visit. Recovery can take weeks, with prolonged swelling and stiffness. In some cases, toes may appear shortened or look different after healing.

A Game-Changer for the Right Patient

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) for hammertoes has transformed how we treat painful, crooked toes. If you have the right type of hammertoe, this procedure may be an excellent option for you.

What Makes MIS Different?

  • Performed in the office under local anesthesia
  • No hospital or surgery center required
  • No large incisions
  • Typically no pins or implants
  • Bones remain intact and in place

The procedure is performed using a needle or a specialized micro-blade technique through very small openings in the skin.

Because the bones are not removed and the soft tissues are minimally disrupted:

  • Swelling is significantly reduced
  • Toes maintain a more natural length and appearance
  • Recovery is much faster

What to Expect

After the procedure, you’ll wear a dressing for about two days. After that, most patients return to normal daily activities and regular shoes (within reason). For patients who prefer it or require it, the procedure can also be performed with sedation or general anesthesia.
